Arsenal and Manchester City are reportedly set to go head-to-head in a bid to land Netherlands youth international starlet Frenkie de Jong, according to The Sun.
The Premier League rivals, who battled it out at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with league leaders City running out comfortable 3-1 winners, have both been linked with the highly rated Ajax midfielder ahead of the forthcoming January transfer window.
The 20-year-old, who has featured five times for Netherlands’ Under-21 side, has scored one goal and provided two assists in 11 appearances in all competitions for the Eredivisie outfit so far this season.
De Jong, who began his career at fellow Dutch outfit Willem II before joining Ajax in 2015, has netted twice in 22 first-team appearances overall since making his first-team debut against Panathinaikos in the UEFA Europa League back in November 2016.
The report suggests rivals Arsenal and City have both approached the Dutch giants about a potential January deal for the talented central midfielder, with the player’s current contract set to expire in June 2019.
Defending Premier League champions Chelsea are also said to be monitoring De Jong’s development, who could be available for around £5m in the New Year market.
