This summer could have proven to be something of a crisis for Barcelona, as the Catalan giants faced the prospect of losing their greatest ever player.

Lionel Messi found himself out of contract with the club at the start of July, but the matter has since been resolved and it appears that the Argentine will stay at the Nou Camp.

The La Liga giants are reportedly still in the midst of financial turmoil, and must therefore shift fringe players.

It had been suggested that they were unable to register new signings Sergio Aguero or Memphis Depay due to issues surrounding the club’s finances.

Now, it appears that one of the club’s out of favour players is on the verge of joining Arsenal.

According to The Sun, the Gunners are close to completing a deal for veteran Barcelona goalkeeper Neto.

Leno could depart Arsenal this summer if an offer is made for the German.

The 31-year-old has been with the club since a £23.4 million move from Valencia in 2019, but has played just 17 times in the time since.

Thew news comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of current Gunners number one Bernd Leno, who’s inconsistent form last season has put his future in doubt.

Neto could therefore be signed to provide competition for places, with Aaron Runarsson also having failed to impress when given the opportunity last season.

A report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo also suggests that the Brazilian ‘keeper had pressed for a move to Arsenal in January, and is keen to gain more regular first team football.

Signing a goalkeeper was one of a number of priorities for the club this summer, with a centre-back, midfielder and striker also on Arteta’s list.

Arsenal have also been linked to Ajax stopper Andre Onana, however they must wait for the verdict of his appeal against a 12-month ban for using a banned substance.
