Arsenal are reportedly edging closer towards sealing their first summer signing in Switzerland international Granit Xhaka for around £35m, according to the Daily Mail.

The Premier League side, who finished second in the English top-flight during the 2015/16 season, an eventual 10 points behind unlikely champions Leicester City, have been heavily linked with Borussia Monchengladbach’s star midfielder.

The 23-year-old, who has 39 international caps for his country and is expected to star for Switzerland at the EURO 2016 finals in France later this year, scored three goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit this season.

Xhaka, who is in London this weekend to undergo a medical with the Gunners ahead of his proposed move, would become the club’s second most expensive signing of all-time behind club-record addition Mesut Ozil (£42m).

Following the departures of fellow central midfielders Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky this summer, Gunners boss Wenger wants Xhaka to fill the void left by the trio.
