Arsenal have reportedly been handed a boost in their pursuit of Switzerland international Granit Xhaka, according to the Daily Star.

The joint Premier League leaders, who host defending champions Chelsea on Sunday, are thought to be willing to splash out £37m on signing the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.

The 23-year-old, who has 39 international caps for his country, has scored three goals in 23 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit this season.

Xhaka, who moved to the Stadion im Borussia-Park for an estimated €8.5m in the summer of 2012 from FC Basel, could leave the German club this summer according to sporting director Max Eberl.

“We have lost players like Reus and ter Stegen, Kruse and Kramer,” he told Bild.

“In the summer perhaps Granit Xhaka will go. We need a good mix between buying and selling to take the next step.

“After four successful years, we are not yet on a par with Bayern, Dortmund, Leverkusen, Schalke and Wolfsburg.”
