Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Italy to face Atalanta on Thursday.

The Gunners will face the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan in the new-look competition, which sees side face eight different sides in the group phase.

Mikel Arteta will want to see his side secure a place in the top eight of the group phase, although he will also have to balance their European exploits with their Premier League title pursuit.

Off the pitch, Arsenal appear to have been handed a significant transfer boost ahead of the January window.

As per Football Transfers, Portuguese side Sporting CP could be willing to sell Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres in January.

The Swedish striker has been a target for the Gunners for some time now – with the North London outfit having scouted him last term – and the report suggests that they remain keen.

Gyokeres could join Arsenal in January

Despite staying put throughout the summer transfer window, the report suggests that the player could be allowed to leave in the new year with Sporting even open to selling him for a lower fee than his release clause of approximately £84 million.

The 26-year-old joined Sporting from Championship side Coventry City last summer and has scored 51 times in 56 games since.

He has been in particularly impressive form at the start of the new campaign, netting eight times in his first five Portuguese top flight matches, as well as scoring three times for Sweden during the recent international break.

The player was said to have been disappointed that he didn’t secure a move to England during the recent summer window, but he now has an agreement in place that he will be allowed to leave if the club’s valuation of him is met.

Gyokeres’ current contract with Sporting still has more than three-and-a-half years remaining, but it appears increasingly likely that he could depart the Portuguese capital prior to 2028.
