A second-half header from Gabriel earned Arsenal victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby on Sunday.

The Brazilian diverted Bukayo Saka’s corner into the net to break the deadlock after the break, and Mikel Arteta’s side held on to pick up all three points.

The Gunners now sit second in the Premier League table, two points behind league leaders and champions Manchester City.

Off the pitch, it appears that Arsenal could be battling it out with several sides from across Europe for the signing of an England international.

According to CaughtOffside, the North London side are currently leading the race to sign Lille midfielder Angel Gomes.

The 24-year-old made his England debut during the recent international break, and impressed during his two showings for the Three Lions.

Gomes previously played for Manchester United at youth level

His impressive form for French side Lille has attracted interest from clubs across Europe, including Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Italian clubs Napoli and Juventus are also said to be keen on the player, as well as German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

Gomes is a product of Manchester United’s youth setup but departed Old Trafford to join Lille in 2020, having made just ten appearances for the Red Devils.

He spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Portuguese side Boavista, but since returning to France he has established himself as a regular for Lille.

In total the midfielder has played 119 times for the Ligue 1 side across all competitions, providing 18 assists.

Gomes’ current contract is set to expire next summer, but the report claims that Lille are trying to persuade him to sign an extension until 2029.

The player himself is reluctant to do so, though, and Arsenal are therefore hopeful of signing the player next year.
