Arsenal fans enjoyed a rare moment of joy on Wednesday evening as the Gunners held on to secure a 1-0 victory over high-flying Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel Arteta’s side went ahead after a mistake from Jorginho left Kepa Arrizabalaga scrambling to hook the ball off his goal line, and Emile Smith Rowe was able to roll the ball into an unguarded net.

The result means the North London side could still qualify for the Europa League next season, while the defeat could have huge repercussions for Chelsea as they chase a top four spot.

The celebrations after Wednesday’s victory may have been cut short, however, as it is being widely reported that veteran defender David Luiz has decided he will depart the club this summer after just two seasons at the Emirates.

The ex-Chelsea defender reportedly made the decision after crunch talks with the club’s hierarchy in the past 24 hours.

According to the The Daily Mail, the Gunners were keen to extend the Brazilian’s stay in North London, but were unable to convince him to put pen-to-paper on a new deal.

Luiz has had a season plagued by injuries, featuring just once since March.

Luiz won the FA Cup in his debut season with Arsenal last year, adding to his illustrious trophy cabinet which also includes Premier League and Champions League titles.

Arteta will now likely have to go into the transfer market for a central defender, with the futures of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding also uncertain.

Luiz, who was seen as one of the most senior figures and biggest characters in the Arsenal dressing room, has previously spoken of his desire to return to Benfica and the Portuguese side may well be his next destination.
