Last season was a campaign to forget for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, as the Gunners limped to their worst league finish in 25 years and failed to qualify for any European competition.

The eighth-placed finish sparked talk of a mass overhaul of the club’s squad however, with less than three weeks to go, Ben White and Nuno Tavares are the club’s only notable signings so far.

One of Arsenal’s loanees, Lucas Torreira, however, enjoyed a season of very different fortunes.

The Uruguayan midfielder spent last term on loan with Atletico Madrid, and played 26 times as the club marched to the La Liga title.

Now, with ties with the Gunners seemingly cut, the 25-year-old, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport, may have found his next move.

Torreira won the La Liga title while on loan with Atletico Madrid last term.

The publication is reporting that the midfielder has agreed a deal with Serie A side Lazio, and that the move will be confirmed in the coming days.

The tenacious midfielder had struggled for game time since Arteta took over the club in 2019, and it appears that his time in North London could now be coming to an end.

Arsenal have also agreed to sell Joe Willock to Newcastle United so it’s no surprise that they are thought to be in the hunt for a midfielder, with Leicester City’s James Maddison heavily linked.

The loss of last season’s Real Madrid loanee pairing of Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos has also heightened the need for reinforcements.

Arsenal kick off their 2021/22 Premier League season with a London derby against newly promoted Brentford on Friday night.
