Arsenal are in the hunt to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, according to reports.

The 30-year-old is currently impressing in a season-long loan at AS Roma, where he has made 28 appearances in all competitions.

Now La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the centre-back’s performances have attracted interest from the Gunners.

Mikel Arteta is looking to bolster his backline squad after taking over as boss in December and it’s claimed the North London side are exploring the possibility of landing Smalling.

Smalling is impressing in Serie A for Roma.

However, it’s thought that Arsenal would have to battle with rivals Tottenham and Everton, who are also keen on the England international.

Roma would also like to secure the Londoner on a permanent deal but with United reportedly wanting in the region of £25million, it gives the three Premier League sides the edge in the race.

Smalling moved to Old Trafford from Fulham in the summer of 2010 and has helped the club win two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.
