Per Mertesacker has slammed Jose Mourinho’s treatment of fellow German star Bastian Schweinsteiger and labelled it as “perverse”, according to Kicker (via The Independent).

The fellow 32-year-old, who hasn’t featured for Arsenal so far this season due to injury, gave his verdict on the ‘Special One’s’ management of the former Germany international, with the Manchester United midfielder being made to train with the club’s Under-23 squad.

Deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, Gunners defender Mertesacker told Kicker, “It’s bad luck for him that he joined a club that has again changed its manager, and that the new manager doesn’t want him.

“It can happen to you at any time in this business, and it’s a bit perverse, but Basti signed a good contract, and he knew where he was going.

“He just had bad luck with the way it worked out. He will draw his conclusions and I wish him all the best.”
