Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a blow on Saturday as a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United ended their unbeaten run.

Mikel Arteta’s side hadn’t lost in the league this season prior to their trip to St. James’ Park, but Anthony Gordon’s controversial second-half strike earned the hosts a huge win.

Gordon’s strike prompted a lengthy VAR review, with the video assistant referees checking that the ball hadn’t gone out of play, before deciding that Joelinton hadn’t fouled Gabriel and, finally, that Gordon himself was onside before converting.

The result leaves the Gunners third in the top flight table, four points ahead of sixth-placed Newcastle.

Following the game, it appears that one of Arsenal’s defenders could be set for a huge pay rise.

Defender Ben White is set to sign a contract extension that will see his weekly wage rise significantly, according to Football Insider.

The report claims that talks over a new deal are going well and the centre-back is expected to sign an extension in the coming months that will make him one of the club’s highest earners.

White, 26, joined the Gunners from Brighton and Hove Albion back in 2021 and made his 100th appearance for the club during the defeat against the Magpies on Saturday.

The defender’s current contract, which is set to run until the summer of 2026, earns him a reported weekly wage of £120,000.

Naturally a central defender, White played an integral role for Arteta’s side at right-back last season as the Gunners finished second in the Premier League, narrowly missing out on the title to eventual winners Manchester City.

White is expected to become the latest of several key players to sign new contracts with Arsenal, following new deals for Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and William Saliba in recent months.
