Arsenal’s hopes of lifting the first major silverware of the English season were ended on Wednesday as they lost 2-0 to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup.

The Magpies had raced into a 2-0 lead after the first leg at The Emirates last month, and goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon earned the hosts a win by the same scoreline at St. James’ Park on Wednesday to see Eddie Howe’s side progress with a 4-0 win on aggregate.

Arsenal will have been disappointed with their performance in the North East, having beaten reigning Premier League champions Manchester City 5-1 just days earlier.

The Gunners will now benefit from an extended break before they return to league action, as they do not feature in the FA Cup this weekend following their exit in the third round.

Off the pitch, it has emerged that an Arsenal target does not regret not joining the club during the recent transfer window.

According to GiveMeSport, Rosenborg midfielder Sverre Nypan is said to be ‘relieved’ that he did not make the move to North London in January.

Arteta has identified Nypan as a target to bolster his Arsenal squad

The report claims that the 18-year-old has indicated he is glad that he didn’t jump at the opportunity to move to Arsenal, however he has also not ruled out the possibility of joining the Gunners this summer.

Nypan is a product of Rosenborg’s youth academy and has now played 60 times for the Norwegian club at senior level, scoring 13 goals and registering 11 assists.

It is claimed that the teenager is glad he snubbed a move to England and is instead taking more time to make a decision on his future.

Despite this, the report also claims that the young player could still join Arsenal with the Premier League side confident about their chances of eventually luring the player to North London.
