Liverpool will look to return to the top of the Premier League table when they travel to face Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds had topped the table until Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Southampton on Saturday, but Arne Slot’s side can return to the summit by beating the Gunners on Sunday.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will hope to make up lost ground in the title race.

Here, we predict the XI that Mikel Arteta could select for the match.

Goalkeeper

David Raya has been Arsenal’s first choice ‘keeper since usurping Aaron Ramsdale shortly after joining the club from Brentford last summer, and the Spaniard will start against Liverpool on Sunday.

Defenders

Arsenal will be without a number of key players for the match, particularly in defence where William Saliba’s suspension following his red card against Bournemouth could prompt Arteta to tinker with his backline.

Jurrien Timber could start at right-back instead of Ben White, who is likely to shift along and play as a central defender. The Englishman is likely to be joined by Gabriel, who has started the season in fine form and has scored important goals against both Tottenham and Manchester City this summer.

At left-back, Oleksandr Zinchenko could start with Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu both sidelined due to injury.

Gabriel will start for Arsenal against Liverpool on Sunday

Midfielders

Declan Rice is likely to be joined in midfield by Thomas Partey, who has enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign having fallen out of favour slightly last term.

New signing Mikel Merino is also in line to start. The Spaniard has featured in Arsenal’s last two league games having recovered from an injury, and he will likely once again start on Sunday.

Partey has started the new season strongly

Captain Martin Odegaard remains injured and therefore won’t be available.

Forwards

Arsenal were dealt a blow when Bukayo Saka was forced off injured whilst on international duty with England earlier this month, but the winger could make a timely return to start against the Reds on Sunday. The Englishman has started the new campaign superbly, scoring twice and registering seven assists in seven Premier League matches so far this term.

Through the middle, Kai Havertz is set to lead the line once again. The German has also started the new campaign superbly, scoring six goals in 12 games across all competitions.

Martinelli could start on the left of Arsenal’s frontline on Sunday

Gabriel Martinelli could be given a start on the left, ahead of Leandro Trossard. Martinelli endured a relatively underwhelming campaign last term, but he has started five league games so far this term and featured in Arsenal’s other two.

Predicted XI: Raya; Timber, White, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Partey, Rice, Merino; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli
