Name: Mesut Özil
In seasons gone by Mesut Özil has flattered to deceive for many Arsenal fans, however this season has been different and he has come of age and provided several key moments in games this season for the Gunners.
This season was make-or-break for Arsenal’s German midfielder, with several high-profile characters suggesting that Özil is too much of a luxury for a team aspiring to win the Premier League. However this season has seen a change. Özil runs an average of 10.24km per 90 minutes. That is more than teammate Alexis Sanchez, who is often praised for his tireless running for his team. It is also more than Manchester City’s all-energy midfielder Fernandinho.
The hard work has not come without reward, as Özil is leading the assists chart in Europe with 16 so far this season. His industrious side, matched with his guile and craft have had Arsenal fans praising their record signing, especially as he has come up with match-defining moments, such as his assists for both goals against Manchester City back in December.
Should the 27-year-old keep his form up until the end of the season, he could potentially lead his side to a Premier League crown and gain personal recognition of being named PFA Player of the Year, which would be much to the Gunners fans’ delight.
