Championship outfit Aston Villa are expected to make an improved bid for Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan after seeing their initial £500,000 offer rejected, according to The Daily Telegraph journalist John Percy on Twitter.

The 33-year-old Republic of Ireland international moved to the bet365 Stadium all the way back in 2008 after spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City, and has since gone on to play 338 times for the Potters, netting eight goals.

And he once again a stalwart of the Stoke side under Mark Hughes last term, earning 30 Premier League appearances to help the club to a 13th place finish in the table, ten points clear of the bottom three.

However, it looks like his nine-year stay in Staffordshire could be coming to an end this summer, as Villa boss Steve Bruce is looking to bring him to Villa Park, with Darren Fletcher’s arrival at Stoke likely to push him down the central midfield pecking order.

And Telegraph journalist Percy has reported that, although they have had a £500,000 bid turned down by the Premier League club, they are still expecting to get a deal done for Whelan during the summer.

Former Birmingham chief Bruce replaced the sacked Roberto Di Matteo at Villa Park back in October and led the side to 13th place in the Championship, but with an 18-point gap to the top six, they will need some serious reinforcements to sustain a promotion challenge next time round.

And given the experience Whelan has accumulated in his career to date, he could certainly do a job in the Villa midfield as they seek a return to the promised land.
