Gil has scored two league goals for Villa in 22 appearances this season.

Currently rock-bottom in the Premier League and an almighty 12 points adrift of safety with only seven games remaining, it is safe to say there hasn’t been much to shout about at Aston Villa this season, although Carles Gil’s thunderous strike against Sunderland in the New Year was something to savour.

Following Adama Traore’s ferocious run down the right flank; after beating several men, the 23-year-old Spaniard unleashed an unstoppable left footed volley into the top right-hand corner after connecting sweetly with the winger’s pinpoint cross.

Gil’s gem temporarily brought his teammates level at the Stadium of Light back in January, although the Black Cats eventually rolled out 3-1 winners thanks to a late brace from striker Jermain Defoe.

That was one of just two league goals for the former Valencia man this term, the other coming against Leicester City back in September.
