Benfica host Bayern Munich in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie, trailing the Bundesliga leaders 1-0 from the first leg in Germany last week.
Rui Vitoria has a tough task ahead of him if he wants Benfica to progress the semi-finals stage of Europe’s most prestigious competition for the first time since 1990, as Bayern’s away form is outstanding – they have gone 11 matches in all competitions without defeat on their travels.
The Bavarian giants are looking to make the semi-finals for the fifth successive season, although it is three years since they last lifted the trophy when they beat Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the final.
Pep Guardiola’s side head into the game on the back of a comfortable 3-1 win over Stuttgart at the weekend, with Douglas Costa and David Alaba on the scoresheet, and the Spaniard will know that this term is his last opportunity to win the Champions League with Bayern before he moves to England to manage Manchester City next season.
Benfica are without their top scorer Jonas, who has scored 32 goals this season, after he was booked and picked up a suspension in the return leg last Tuesday, but strike partner Kostas Mitroglou has hit 14 goals in his last 17 games.
Vitoria’s side’s last outing was a 2-1 victory against Academica on Saturday, but they have scored nine goals in their last two matches at the Estadio da Luz.
Benfica will have to face Bayern without three of their key players – Jonas (suspended) Julio Cesar (thigh) and Lisandro Lopez (back) are all missing. Meanwhile, Nicolas Gaitan is also a doubt with a muscular problem.
Bayern are without several key players, including Jerome Boateng and Arjen Robben with groin injuries. Other than that, Guardiola will have a fully-fit squad to choose from with Kingsley Coman expected to be fit after suffering a slight knock against Stuttgart.
