Manchester United’s pursuit of a place in the top four of the Premier League took a blow on Sunday as they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United.

The result saw The Magpies leapfrog United into third place, although The Red Devils didn’t actually drop out of the top four until Tottenham Hotspur drew 1-1 against Everton on Monday.

A matter of weeks ago United were being touted as contenders for the Premier League title, but a run of poor form in the league means they are now fighting for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Despite their worrying form, United have been boosted by news that one of their defenders has signed a new deal.

As announced by the club on their official website, left-back Luke Shaw has signed a new contract with Manchester United.

The new deal will keep the England international at Old Trafford until 2027, the statement confirms.

Shaw has committed his long-term future to Manchester United

Shaw, 27, joined United from Southampton back in 2014 having impressed on the south coast.

The full-back played regularly during his first season in Manchester, before suffering a double leg break against Dutch side PSV in 2015.

That slowed his progression, and Shaw struggled to maintain a regular starting spot during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge of the club.

More recently, though, the defender has once again become a key part of the United squad and his next match will take him to 250 appearances for the club.

This season, the Englishman has made 36 appearances across all competitions, helping United to win the Carabao Cup and reach the latter stages of both the FA Cup and the Europa League.

He has also become a regular for England, being The Three Lions’ first choice left-back at both Euro 2020 and the World Cup in Qatar last year.
