Manchester City continue the defence of their Premier League title when they host Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s side are one of only two teams – along with Liverpool – to have won their opening three matches of the new season, and the Spaniard will be hoping to see his side continue their impressive start against the Bees.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank will be wary of the threat of City forward Erling Haaland, who has scored seven goals in City’s first three games of the new campaign, including back-to-back hat-tricks against Ipswich Town and West Ham United.

While the Citizens already pose a daunting threat to opposition teams, it appears that Guardiola’s side could be boosted by the arrival of a new midfielder in January.

According to Football Insider, attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri will join the City squad in the new year.

City signed the 18-year-old from River Plate in January, but he was loaned back to the Argentinian outfit for the remainder of 2024.

Echeverri is set to join up with the City squad in January

The report clams that the teenager will join up with his new teammates in January, before being involved with Guardiola’s squad for the second half of the campaign.

Echeverri has made a total of 35 appearances for River Plate across all competitions at senior level, scoring four times and providing five assists.

The versatile attacker – who can play on either flank or as an attacking midfielder – is contracted to City until 2028 and those in charge of the club view him as a potential star of the future.

City sold fellow Argentine Julian Alvarez to Spanish side Atletico Madrid over the summer, and Guardiola may feel his squad is therefore a little light in the attacking midfield role.

The arrival of Echeverri in the new year will be a welcome boost for the Citizens, as they look to challenge for silverware on all fronts.
