Steve Bruce wants to keep Sam Johnstone at Villa Park.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Bruce is set to hold talks with Manchester United to discuss signing the keeper on a permanent deal.

Johnstone has played in 21 matches since joining Villa on loan in January.

With 12 months left on his Old Trafford contract it’s decision time for the keeper who hasn’t made a single top team appearance for United. Despite uncertainty over the future of David de Gea it seems unlikely that United will call up Johnstone.

The keeper’s form for Villa has been double edged with a number of clubs impressed ahead of a transfer window where a number of keepers are expected to be on the move.

Sunderland boss Davie Moyes is known to be keen on Johnstone who could be brought in as a replacement for Jordan Pickford who is expected to move on due to relegation.
