Premier League outfit Burnley have this afternoon confirmed on their official website the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood.
The 26-year-old moves to Turf Moor for an undisclosed fee, and has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the Clarets in a bid to help establish them as a Premier League club.
The Englishman, who spent almost five years at Villa, is not eligible to feature for Sean Dyche’s men against Leicester this evening, but will likely be in line to make his debut against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
Clearly, the midfielder was very happy to secure a move to Turf Moor today, telling the official website: ‘I’m delighted to be here.
‘It’s happened fast but I’ve been made to feel very welcome and I can’t wait to get going. The manager at Villa said I could speak to Burnley and for me that was perfect – a fresh start because things had got a bit stale at Villa.
‘It’s a fresh start and I want to show people what I can really do.’
Westwood made 162 appearances for Villa between 2012 and 2017, and was a regular feature of the side that spent four seasons in the top-flight before relegation last year.
There’s no doubt that the 26-year-old has ability, and his prior experience of the Premier League, where he made 124 appearances, will be invaluable for a Burnley side trying to retain their top-flight status this season.
