Career in pictures: Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres

Euro 2008 success

The striker’s excellent form for his club sides earned him his Spanish debut in 2003, and he lifted his first piece of silverware with his country five years later at the European Championships.

Torres went in Euro 2008 off the back of a stunning first season at Anfield, and netted once for Luis Aragones side against Sweden in the group stages to help Spain reach the final, where it was Torres who had the big say as they beat Germany 1-0

The 33-year-old scored the only goal of the game (above) after 33 minutes to secure Spain only their second European crown, and Torres’ first major trophy.
