After a few more seasons at Upton Park, Ferdinand made an £18 million move to Leeds United, which was at the time a British transfer record.

In turn, he became the world’s most expensive defender.

At the age of 22, he went on to become an important part of the Leeds team, and is seen here in action in their 2-0 defeat away at Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup in January 2001.

Later on that season, he helped David O’Leary’s side reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, although they lost 3-0 on aggregate to Valencia in the last four.
