Premier League outfit Leicester and Scottish champions Celtic are battling it out to sign former Southampton defender Martin Caceres, according to The Sun.

The 30-year-old centre-back moved to St Mary’s in February as manager Claude Puel increased his options following the injury to Virgil van Dijk and departure of captain Jose Fonte, although was released by the Saints last week.

He managed just one Premier League appearance in his time on the South Coast, playing 90 minutes in their 2-1 win over Middlesbrough earlier this month, yet the great form of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens made it difficult for him to get much of a chance.

However, Caceres may well remain in Britain as reports suggest that Craig Shakespeare’s Leicester and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are targeting a move for the out-of-contract star, and both have reportedly already held talks with the 30-year-old over a potential deal.

The Foxes struggled in their Premier League title defence, conceding a mammoth 63 goals in the league this term, and boss Shakespeare will want to improve his defensive options so they are not involved in a relegation dog-fight next term.

Yet they face competition from Rodgers’ Celtic, who take on Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final this afternoon knowing victory would seal the Treble for the Bhoys, as well as see them go through the whole domestic season unbeaten.

They will be looking to how they can be stronger in European competition next season, and with Caceres having had vast amounts of experience at Juventus, Sevilla, and Barcelona, he could be exactly what they need in the Champions League next term.
