Former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the new England boss.

According to BBC Sport, the German has agreed to succeed interim boss Lee Carsley, who had taken charge earlier this year following the departure of Gareth Southgate.

Tuchel has been out of work since leaving German giants Bayern Munich at the end of last season, having failed to guide the Bavarian side to the Bundesliga title.

He left Germany following last season, and is believed to have first been contacted about the possibility of taking the England job over the summer.

In taking the role, Tuchel will become the Three Lions’ third foreign manager and then first German coach to take charge of the English national side.

Tuchel boasts an impressive record in knockout football, having guided Chelsea to the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

Prior to that, the German had won the French Cup and French League Cup with Paris Saint-Germain, as well as two Ligue 1 titles.

He then added a Bundesliga title to his trophy cabinet during his first season in Germany, before becoming the first Bayern manager in a decade to fail to win the top flight title last season.

England reached the finals of Euro 2020 and 2024 under former boss Southgate, but became the first country in history to lose consecutive European Championships when they were beaten 2-1 by Spain in July.

Tuchel is now likely to take charge of the Three Lions going into the World Cup in North America in 2026, as well as the European Championships in 2028 – most of which is being played in England.

The 51-year-old is set to take charge of England following next month’s Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland, which Carlsey will remain in charge for.

Tuchel’s first games in charge could be planned World Cup qualifiers in March next year, although that could change if England fail to top their Nations League group as they may then have to fulfil play-off fixtures before qualification for the showpiece in 2026 begins.
