Manchester United go into tomorrow’s EFL Cup final at Wembley Stadium as the heavy favourites over Claude Puel’s Southampton side, but Saints legend Mick Channon thinks that they will have a chance if they can stop Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The former Barcelona and Pairs Saint-Germain striker, who made the move to Old Trafford as a free agent last summer, has silenced all doubters with his sensational form this season, and Channon thinks he is the one Saints must focus on.
“Ibrahimovic has been absolutely brilliant. Make no mistake, he’s the best signing of the year. For me, he is like Didier Drogba when he was at his best at Chelsea,” Channon told the Express.
“He’s a match winner and a goalscorer. United can win 1-0 and he’ll score the goal or they can win 5-4 and he’ll score four.
“He is definitely the biggest threat. If we can wrap him up, we’ve got a great chance That’s where the game will be won or lost.”
Mick Channon was on the pitch for the south coast side the last time they lifted a major trophy, beating the Red Devils 1-0 in 1976 to lift the FA Cup, thanks to a left-footed strike from Bobby Stokes.
A win on Sunday would bring the League Cup back to Southampton for the first time in the club’s history, having lost to Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in their only other final appearance in the competition.
