Frank Lampard was denied a fairytale return to Chelsea on Saturday as The Blues were beaten 1-0 by Wolves at Molineux.

The 44-year-old was announced as Chelsea’s caretaker manager on Thursday, taking charge of the club until the end of the current season.

The former England captain faces a difficult task to change his side’s fortunes, though, with the west London outfit having won just four of their last 20 Premier League matches.

At present, The Blues sit 11th in the table, making it likely that winning the Champions League represents their only chance of qualifying for the competition next term.

European champions Real Madrid await Chelsea in the quarter-finals, though, with the first leg taking place in the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening.

Ahead of the tie, Chelsea appear to have been handed a boost with one of their key players committing his future to the club.

As reported by 90min, left-back Ben Chilwell has agreed terms to extend his contract with the London side.

The agreement comes months after Premier League champions Manchester City were rumoured to be interested in the full-back.

Chilwell is set to sign a new contract with Chelsea having agreed terms

The England international joined The Blues from Leicester City back in 2020 and has since impressed in west London.

In total he has made 80 appearances for Chelsea, although he has also struggled with injuries throughout his time at Stamford Bridge.

The full-back has scored nine goals and provided 12 assists across all competitions in that time, but has also missed more than 50 matches for his current side due to injury.

Despite that, it appears that those in charge of the club were keen to keep hold of Chilwell and the player has reportedly agreed terms.

The new contract is set to run until 2027, two years beyond the player’s existing deal that is set to expire in 2025.

This term, the Englishman has been a key player for Chelsea, making 26 appearance across all competitions.

Chilwell has been arguably one of Chelsea’s most impressive players so far during what has been a dismal season for the club.

Those in charge of Chelsea have acted quickly, though, amid interest from The Citizens.
