Chelsea and Everton are reportedly set to go head-to-head in a race to sign Portugal international star William Carvalho this summer, according to the Mirror.

The Premier League duo, who face West Ham United and Tottenham at home in their respective 2016/17 English top-flight campaign openers next month, are both interested in signing the Sporting Lisbon midfielder ahead of the new term.

The 24-year-old, who has 25 international caps for his country and helped Portugal defeat France in the EURO 2016 final earlier this month, scored three goals and provided three assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for the Liga NOS outfit last season.

Carvalho, who has been at Sporting since he was aged 13, is wanted by new Toffees boss Ronald Koeman as the club’s high-profile midfield summer signing.

The report suggests Everton are leading the chase for the Portuguese player, but Chelsea have joined the pursuit following their failure to lure Belgium international Radja Nainggolan from AS Roma earlier this summer.
