As we pass the quarter-way mark of the campaign, this Premier League season is already shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent years, at both ends of the table.

At the bottom, the likes of Leeds United and Newcastle United, even with their new-found fortunes, will be trying to avoid he drop, while Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool battle it out for the title at the other end.

The Blues have taken an early advantage in the title race, having already played all of their traditional ‘top six’ rivals, however City and Liverpool will both have other ideas.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have only lost once so far, but find themselves a point behind second-placed City, who are themselves a single point behind leaders Chelsea.

Now, it appears that Chelsea and Liverpool will go head to head off the pitch, in a battle to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, the two clubs both hold an interest in the centre-back, who has emerged as one of the club’s most important players this season.

Araujo has made 14 appearances for Barcelona this season.

The Uruguayan has played 10 La Liga games so far, scoring on one occasion.

The 22-year-old joined Barca from Uruguayan side Boston River three years ago, and established himself in the first team under Ronald Koeman last season, before building on his progress this term.

The player’s contract with the Spanish side is due to expire in 2023 and, although it is believed he would prefer to stay, the Catalan giant’s financial situation may mean that they struggle to make him a suitable offer.

Araujo, who spent time in the club’s La Masia academy, was signed for less than £2 million in 2018, but could now be the subject of big money offers from some of Europe’s top clubs.

Chelsea are believed to be interested in the player as they plan for the possibility of losing Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger next summer.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have benefitted from the return of Virgil van Dijk this season, but Joe Gomez is once again struggling with injury and they could opt to recruit defensive reinforcements.
