The 2022 World Cup came to an end on Sunday as Argentina beat France in a thrilling final to lift the trophy for the third time.

The South American side had taken an early 2-0 lead but were pegged back to 2-2 ten minutes from time when Kylian Mbappe netted a quick fire brace.

The match went to extra-time and Lionel Messi’s second goal of the game looked to have sealed victory, before Mbappe netted a second penalty to complete his hat-trick and send the game to a shootout.

Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni both missed their penalties, allowing Gonzalo Montiel to score the winning spot kick and spark wild celebrations.

Now, talk is turning to the return of Premier League football, which kicks-off again on Boxing Day after a month-long break.

The top flight sides all play just one league match before the January transfer window opens, and it appears that most of the clubs in the division will be busy in the market.

According to reports, Chelsea and Liverpool are set to battle it out for a midfielder who impressed at the World Cup.

Both sides are interested in Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo, as per Sky Sports.

The report claims that both The Blues and The Reds are interested in the 21-year-old, who was in sensational form for Ecuador in Qatar, although his current employers have no plans to let him leave.

Caicedo scored in Ecuador’s final group stage match against Senegal

The midfielder netted his first World Cup goal during Ecuador’s defeat to Senegal, and it appears that his performances didn’t go unnoticed.

It is claimed that talks haven’t yet officially started, though, and The Seagulls are under very little pressure to sell as the player is contracted to the club until 2025.

Caicedo joined Brighton from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle in February last year and spent a short spell on loan at Belgian side Beerschot VA at the end of 2021.

Since returning to England he has established himself as a regular for Brighton, initially under Chelsea boss Graham Potter, who was in charge of the south coast club at the time.

The South American cost Brighton just £5 million when he was signed from his homeland, and it was rumoured that Manchester United considered a move for him around the same time but ultimately missed out.

This term, Caicedo has made 15 appearances for The Seagulls, taking his tally for the club to 25.

It has been suggested that Chelsea are on the hunt for at least one central midfielder, with both Jorginho and N’Golo Kante set to be out of contract next summer.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were in the market for a midfielder during the summer, but failed to land any of their targets on a permanent basis, with Arthur Melo arriving on loan from Juventus.
