Chelsea have completed the signing of central defender Aaron Anselmino from Argentinian side Boca Juniors.

The Blues announced on Thursday that the 19-year-old centre-back had signed a seven-year contract with the club.

He will, however, spend the upcoming 2024/25 campaign on loan at Boca in order to aide his development.

The 19-year-old is a product of Boca’s youth academy and has made ten senior appearances for the Argentine giants so far, scoring on one occasion.

Anselmino becomes Chelsea’s eighth signing of a busy summer transfer window so far, following the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu and Renato Veiga through the door at Stamford Bridge.

Since taking charge of the West London outfit two years ago, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have spent well in excess of £1 billion on new signings, adopting a policy of primarily targeting promising young players.

The likes of Deivid Washington, Andrey Santos and Angelo have all arrived over the past two seasons, but have since failed to establish themselves in the first team squad.

Despite their significant spending, the Blues have filed to qualify for the Champions League since their American owners took charge in 2022, with Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard, Mauricio Pochettino and now Maresca having all been in the hot seat.

As well as playing in his natural central defensive position, Anselmino is also capable of operating as a defensive midfielder.
