Chelsea face Championship side Middlesbrough in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening.

The Blues arrive at The Riverside Stadium in fine form, having won five of their last six games across all competitions.

After a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge, manager Mauricio Pochettino will be keen to ensure his side continue their recent good form during the second half of the season.

The Argentine will want to take a strong lead in the tie with a first leg victory, before the second leg at Stamford Bridge in a fortnight.

In the build up to the game, it has emerged that one of Chelsea’s defenders is set to leave the club on loan.

According to 90min, full-back Ian Maatsen is set to join German side Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the current season.

The report claims, though, that the deal won’t include an option-to-buy clause and the Dutchman will instead sign a new long-term contract with the Blues upon departure.

Maatsen is set to spend the remainder of the current season on loan at Borussia Dortmund

Maatsen, 21, is a product of Chelsea’s youth academy and has previously spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Burnley.

Last season the defender played a crucial role for the Clarets as Vincent Kompany’s side secured promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

Burnley made an offer to sign Maatsen permanently last summer and had an offer of £31.5 million accepted by Chelsea, but the player himself opted to stay put.

He returned to West London last summer, but has failed to establish himself as a regular under Pochettino.

In total Maatsen has made 15 appearances across all competitions so far this season, but he has only started a single Premier League game.

Maatsen’s current Chelsea contract is set to run until the summer of 2025, but the report claims that he will sign a new deal before leaving for Germany.
