Chelsea’s lack of depth in midfield has been highlighted on more than one occasion this term, with injuries to Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and N’Golo Kante all coinciding with spells of poor form for the Blues.

The club’s senior trio of midfielders have all missed parts of the season due to injuries and Covid-19 related isolation, and the lack of options to deputise has been highlighted in their absence.

The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley have impressed on occasion when given the opportunity to do so, but not to the extent of those above them in the pecking order, while on-loan Saul Niguez has been heavily criticised for almost all of his performances in blue so far.

Chelsea’s situation is made more frustrating for Blues fans by the performances of Conor Gallagher on loan at Crystal Palace.

The Englishman has arguably been one of the standout performers in the league so far this term, but is unable to be recalled by his parent club due to a clause in his loan agreement.

Now, it appears that Chelsea are edging closer to a deal for a French star that would solve their midfield depth problems.

Tchouameni is regarded as one of the most promising young players in the world

As per The Telegraph via The Chelsea Chronicle, the Blues are making progress in their pursuit of AS Monaco midfielder Aurelian Tchouameni.

The report states that the player is fast becoming the club’s top target, ahead of West Ham United’s Declan Rice, who has been heavily linked with a return to his former side.

The Telegraph’s Matt Law has stated that Chelsea are hopeful of agreeing a deal for the player due to a positive relationship with the player’s agent.

Tchouameni shares an agent with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, who Chelsea were very close to signing last term, and the relationship built then is helping Chelsea to move closer to a deal for the midfielder.

Tchouameni has established himself as a regular for Monaco and is being touted as one of the future stars of French football having made his senior debut in September.

The 21-year-old has made 73 appearances for the club since signing from Bordeaux in January 2019, including starting 16 of the club’s 19 league games so far this season.
