Chelsea enter into race for one of world’s most prolific strikers

Chelsea could look to hijack a move for Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski this summer, if Spanish side Barcelona fail to agree terms with the player. 

As per The Guardian, the 33-year-old’s future in Germany has been thrown into serious doubt after the striker revealed he has no intention of extending is deal, which is due to expire next summer.

The La Liga giants had emerged as frontrunners to secure the Poland international’s signature, and reports have also suggested that the two parties have verbally agreed a deal.

Bayern remain adamant that the player will not be sold, though, which could mean that the forward leaves the club next summer for free.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund striker is intent on a move to Spain but, if the Barcelona deal falls through, he may have to settle for another destination as Real Madrid are instead focussing on luring Kylian Mbappe to the Spanish capital.

Despite Barcelona being close to signing Lewandowski, it appears that Chelsea have considered a move for the player and will be ready to hijack the deal if anything goes wrong.

The report claims that Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is a keen admirer of the Bayern man, and would have loved to sign him last summer before the arrival fo £100 million man Romelu Lukaku.

Chelsea’s chances of signing the player depend largely on whether or not Lukaku can be offloaded, though.

The Premier League club will struggle to get anywhere near the huge fee that they paid for him, but with his performances failing to impress and the player himself unhappy, it seems that a departure is vital for both parties.

Another potential obstacle for Chelsea could be the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership.

The Blues are currently unable to buy or sell players until a takeover is officially completed, although it is hoped that a consortium led by Todd Boehly will soon complete their purchase.

Lewandowski has scored a remarkable 343 goals in 374 games for the Bundesliga club, and has also provided 72 assists.
