Chelsea are reportedly hopeful of beating Arsenal and Manchester City to the signing of Portugal international defender Nelson Semedo.
The Premier League trio are all understood to be considering January moves for the highly-rated Benfica right-back following his impressive breakthrough start to the 2015-16 campaign.
The 22-year-old, who made his international debut against Serbia back in October, has scored once in nine appearances in all competitions for the Liga NOS outfit so far this season.
With Branislav Ivanoic unable to recapture his title-winning form of last year at Stamford Bridge; Blues boss Jose Mourinho is keen to recruit Nelson in the New Year as the Serbian’s long-term replacement, meanwhile the Gunners and Citizens have been thoroughly impressed with the youngster’s performances in this term’s UEFA Champions League.
However other sources indicate that the defender’s current contract at Benfica includes a hefty £20m release clause.
