Chelsea have reportedly emerged as surprise favourites to land Netherlands international goalkeeper Tim Krul, according to the Daily Express.

The Premier League side, who moved eight points clear at the top of the league table after defeating Hull City 2-0 on Sunday, are said to be keen on bringing in the Newcastle United goalkeeper as cover for first-choice No.1 Thibaut Courtois.

The 28-year-old, who has eight international caps for his country, signed a new one-year contract extension at St James’ Park before joining Ajax on a season-long loan deal back in August 2016.

Krul, who has been with The Magpies since 2005, is wanted by Blues boss Antonio Conte to replace wantaway shot stopper Asmir Begovic, who wishes to leave Stamford Bridge before the close of the January transfer window next Tuesday.

Chelsea have already rejected a £10m offer for the Bosnian’s services from AFC Bournemouth, because Conte wants to bring in a replacement first and foremost.
