Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca took charge of his first training session on Monday, as some of the Blues’ players returned for the start of pre-season.

The Italian was appointed as the club’s new boss earlier this summer, following the departure of his predecessor Mauricio Pochettino by mutual consent.

Maresca, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, arrives having guided Leicester City to the Championship title last term.

The Blues have already been very busy during this summer’s transfer window, with Tosin Adarabioyo, Omari Kellyman, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Now, the West London club are closing in on a surprise move for a MLS defender.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Chelsea are finalising a move for Atlanta United left-back Caleb Wiley.

Wiley has played more than 75 times in the MLS at the age of 19

The 19-year-old is set to join the Blues in a deal worth £8.5 million, Romano claims, although the teenager is set to join Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg, initially.

Wiley has already played more than 80 times for the MLS side across all competitions and has impressed on the left of defence, although he can also play further forward as a left wing-back.

So far this season the American – who has been capped at under-23 level by his country – has played 22 times for his club, scoring once and providing two assists.

It is also claimed that the young defender is set to sign a contract with Chelsea that will run until the summer of 2031, continuing the Blues’ pattern of signing young players on long-term deals.

Atlanta will be entitled to a sell-n percentage as part of a clause included in the proposed deal, Romano also claims.
