Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping to see his side put on another impressive display when they face Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Blues beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 in their last away match, before earning a point courtesy of a thrilling 4-4 draw against Premier League leaders Manchester City prior to the international break.

After a summer of huge spending and a squad overhaul, Pochettino looks to finally be getting a tune out of his side following a relatively slow start to the campaign.

Now, one of Chelsea’s fringe players is reportedly set to be offered a new contract.

According to Football Insider, Ian Maatsen is set to be rewarded with a new deal in the near future.

The player’s contract had been set to expire at the end of the current season, but the Blues recently activated a 12-month extension meaning that it will now expire in the summer of 2025.

Maatsen has played a bit-part role for Chelsea so far this season

So far this season, the 21-year-old has made nine appearances across all competitions, including seven in the Premier League.

The left-back is yet to start a top flight game, but the report claims that Chelsea still intend on offering the Dutchman a new contract.

A product of Chelsea’s youth academy, Maatsen has previously spent time on loan at Coventry City and Charlton Athletic.

He spent last season on loan at Burnley and made 42 appearances for the Clarets, helping Vincent Kompany’s side to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

During the recent transfer window, Burnley had an offer for the player accepted, but Maatsen himself opted to stay put at Stamford Bridge and try to force his way into the starting line up.

The versatile youngster is able to play in a number of roles, including left-back, left wing and as an attacking midfielder.
