Chelsea will have to overcome a two-goal deficit if they are to progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The Blues were beaten 2-0 by holders Real Madrid in the Spanish capital on Wednesday evening, although the scoreline could have been far worse for the Premier League side.

Karim Benzema put the hosts ahead in Madrid before England international Ben Chilwell was sent off for pulling back Rodrygo as the Brazilian headed towards goal.

Substitute Marco Asensio then doubled Real’s advantage, leaving Frank Lampard’s side with a mountain to climb during the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

There could be some good news on the horizon for The Blues, though, as the club reportedly have renewed hope of reaching an agreement with midfielder Mason Mount over his contract.

The Englishman’s current deal is set to expire next summer and talks have so far failed to progress, but 90min now claim that the London club are now optimistic about reaching an agreement with the player.

Mount, 24, has been one of Chelsea’s most important players since making his debut for the club in 2019, during Frank Lampard’s first tenure as manager of the club.

Mount’s future remains in doubt as he nears the final 12 months of his current deal

The midfielder has now made more than 190 appearances for the club, scoring 33 goals and providing 37 assists across all competitions.

His future has been in serious doubt for some time now, though, with Chelsea reportedly ready to sell him this summer if an extension to his current deal couldn’t be reached.

Liverpool were said to be interested in signing the former Derby County loanee, but it appears that Chelsea haven’t given up on keeping hold of the player.

The report claims that talks between Mount’s representatives and Chelsea have never fully broken down, and further negotiations are scheduled for the coming weeks.

Those in charge of the club allegedly believe that the plan in place at Stamford Bridge for the coming years is impressive enough to convince Mount to sign a contract extension.

Since taking charge of the club last summer, owner Todd Boehly has spent more than £500 million on 16 new signings.

Despite the influx of new signings, Mount has still made 33 appearances across all competitions so far this season.
