Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a staggering £40m swoop for Atletico Madrid star Koke.

The defending Premier League champions, who have only managed to pick up eight points from their opening league games, are keen to bolster their midfield ranks during the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old, who has 20 international caps for Spain, has found the back of the net once in five appearances so far this season for the La Liga outfit.

With his current crop of creative midfielders at Stamford Bridge, such as Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard, seemingly unable to rediscover their devastating form of last year, Blues boss Jose Mourinho is tempted to bring in some fresh competition over the New Year period.

Koke is regarded as one of Europe’s best young players in the attacking midfielder role, although Atletico are unlikely to part with their prized asset at the midway point of the campaign for less than £40m.
