Midfielder Carney Chuwuemeka has departed Chelsea to join German side Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season.

The Blues announced on Monday that the Englishman had joined Dortmund just hours before the mid-season window slams shut.

Chukwuemeka has fallen almost completely out of favour since the arrival of Enzo Maresca as head coach last summer, and it always appeared likely that the central midfielder would depart Stamford Bridge during the January window.

The 21-year-old joined Chelsea from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa in the summer of 2022, and was hampered by injuries during his first two seasons in the capital.

The midfielder made a total of 27 appearances across all competitions over the course of his first two seasons with the club, but has appeared just five times for Maresca’s side this season and is yet to play in the league during the current campaign.

Chukwuemeka – who cost Chelsea a fee of around £20 million two-and-a-half years ago – has scored twice for the club at senior level, most recently against Leicester City in the quarter-finals of last season’s FA Cup.

This season the Austrian-born midfielder has been behind the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in the pecking order of midfielders in Maresca’s squad.

As well as playing as a centrally midfielder, the former Villa man is also capable of playing in an advanced midfield role.

His only appearances this season for Chelsea came in the Europa Conference League and Carabao Cup, though, with the Englishman one of a number of senior first team players that have been ousted almost entirely from Maresca’s bloated squad.

Chukwuemeka is contracted to the West London side until the end of the 2027/28 campaign.
