Chelsea welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

The Blues have been inconsistent to say the least so far this season, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side did defeat Sheffield United 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle’s poor form away from home will also give Blues supporters cause for optimism, although the Magpies will undoubtedly still provide a tough test at Stamford Bridge.

Off the pitch, those in charge of the club have reportedly made a huge decision ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

As per 90min, the West London club are now prepared to let Ian Maatsen leave in January.

The 21-year-old is a graduate of Chelsea’s youth system but has struggled to establish himself in the first team at Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen could leave Chelsea when the transfer window reopens

In total he has made just 13 appearances for his boyhood club, 12 of which have been this season.

The versatile Dutchman, who can also operate in a number of midfield roles, spent last season on loan at Burnley and played a key role in helping Vincent Kompany’s side achieve promotion from the Championship to the top tier.

The Clarets had an offer to sign Maatsen permanently accepted over the summer, but the player himself declined the opportunity to return to Turf Moor and instead stayed put in the capital.

The report claims that German giants Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Maatsen, while Italian clubs Napoli and Roma are also keeping tabs on the player.

Fellow Premier League sides West Ham United and Manchester City have also shown interest in the Netherlands Under-21 international, who has previously spent time on loan at Coventry City and Charlton Athletic.

Chelsea recently activated a clause to extend the defender’s contract by a further 12 months, meaning it will now expire in 2025.
