Chelsea are expected to complete the signing of FIFA World Cup winner Marco Amelia on Thursday.

The defending Premier League champions, who have only managed to pick up eight points from their opening eight league games so far this season, want cover for goalkeeper Asmir Begovic after regular number one Thibaut Courtois underwent knee surgery.

The 33-year-old, who lifted the World Cup with Italy back in 2006, is a free agent after leaving Italian outfit Perugia towards the end of last season.

Amelia, who earned nine international caps for his country, also represented Livorno, Palermo, Genoa and AC Milan throughout his career, making over 300 appearances across all competitions.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho commented, “He knows the responsibility of playing in the Champions League [and] his national team.

“The last couple of years he didn’t play so much and hasn’t trained with a team for a few months, but what you need is some cover and stability until Courtois is back.

“Maybe he’s the guy to give us that.”
