Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will hope to see his side benefit from not competing in Europe next season.

The Blues endured a turbulent season last term during which both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior left the club, with the west London outfit ultimately finishing tenth in the Premier League table.

Their lowly finish means Chelsea will not compete in any European competition next season, allowing Alonso to focus solely on the Premier League and domestic cup competitions.

Ahead of the start of their pre-season campaign, the Blues have been boosted by news that one of their most talented youngsters has signed a new deal with the club.

Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that 19-year-old winger Jesse Derry had put pen-to-paper on a new long-term deal at Stamford Bridge.

The teenager has signed a contract that will run until the end of the 2031/32 campaign, but journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the Englishman will now depart on loan to Portuguese side Sporting CP.

Derry joined Chelsea’s academy from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2025 and made his senior debut for the Blues in an FA Cup match against Hull City in February.

He has played twice since and was impressive during the first-half of his Premier League debut – against Nottingham Forest in May – before being forced off just before the break after suffering a head injury.

Romano claims that Derry will spent the 2026/27 season on loan at Portuguese giants Sporting, with the Lisbon outfit covering his salary in full.

The Portuguese side will not, however, have the option to sign Derry permanently when his loan spell ends at the end of next season, Romano claims.
