Chelsea will be looking to book their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals when they face Newcastle United on Tuesday evening.

The Blues have endured a difficult season so far but returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday afternoon.

Second-half strikes from Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson earned Mauricio Pochettino’s side a crucial three points, lifting them up to tenth in the Premier League table.

The Magpies will undoubtedly provide a stern test for Pochettino’s men, though, although their recent away form will give the Argentine hope of progression into the last four of the competition.

In the meantime, it appears likely that one of Chelsea’s key players will now stay put beyond the January transfer window.

Midfielder Conor Gallagher had been heavily linked with a move away from the club over the summer and was expected to be available for sale next month, but he is now likely to stay put according to Football Insider.

Gallagher is now set to stay put at Stamford Bridge beyond the January transfer window

The 23-year-old is a product of Chelsea’s fruitful youth academy and established himself as a regular in the first team at the start of last season.

In total he has now made 64 appearances across all competitions for the Blues, including 19 games already this season.

The England international’s contract is set to expire in 2025, though, and uncertainty surrounding an extension had therefore prompted speculation that he might depart.

Despite this, the report claims that the midfielder is now set to stay having established himself as a kay player for Pochettino in recent months.

Pochettino has also revealed recently that it is ‘the club’s decision’ whether or not to extend the player’s deal.

Over the summer, London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were both credited with an interest in Gallagher, but a move never materialised.
