Chelsea are determined to beat Manchester City to the summer signing of Everton defender John Stones, according to the Sunday Mirror.

The Blues submitted a number of bids for the 21-year-old last summer, the highest of which was around the £30 million mark, but all of the offers were rejected by the Toffees despite the versatile defender handing in a transfer request.

However, that interest is set to ramp up again at the end of the season, with incoming Citizens manager Pep Guardiola also a big fan of the England international, although the Premier League holders are determined to see off their rivals in the race to sign the highly-rated centre-back, who is valued at around £50 million.

Stones, who has made more than 80 appearances for the Merseysiders, is seen as the long-term successor to Chelsea captain John Terry, who looks set to leave the club in the summer after not being offered a new contract.
