Manchester City are closing in on a deal to sign Ryan Bertrand.

According to a report in The Sun the Southampton left-back is close to signing a City deal after Monaco ruled out the transfer of Benjamin Mendy.

Bertrand has been a key part of Southampton’s recent success story after signing from Chelsea in February 2015 where he won a Champions League medal.

City are looking to reshape their defence with Bertrand being watched over the last few months and are confident of landing the 27-year-old despite suggestions that Chelsea may be keen on taking him back to Stamford Bridge.

Monaco are determined to avoid the wholesale break up of their side and won’t entertain any offers for Mendy.

Southampton don’t want to lose Bertrand with Virgil van Dijk expected to leave but with a massive transfer fee, a pay hike and Champions League football on offer they’ll find it difficult to say no to the offer from the Etihad.
