Conte should drop these 3 Chelsea players against Liverpool

Chelsea will be brimming with confidence ahead of their trip to Anfield on Tuesday night (20:00), not only because of their good form, but because of Liverpool’s poor phase.

The Blues, who sit eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League standings, and 10 points ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s hosts, have won 14 of their last 15 encounters in all competitions – only losing 2-0 at Tottenham at the start of January.

Unlike Liverpool; who undoubtedly have to drop numerous flops after their FA Cup fourth round exit to Championship outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blues boss Antonio Conte has a healthy dilemma ahead of picking his starting XI for Tuesday’s clash, after watching his Chelsea side breeze past Brentford 4-0 on Saturday to book their place in the fifth round.

Goals from Willian, Pedro, Branislav Ivanovic and Michy Batshuayi (pen) saw The Blues cruise into the next round.

But, who should Conte drop ahead of Chelsea’s crucial Premier League clash at Liverpool? Here’s three options…

Asmir Begovic

Despite keeping a clean sheet against The Bees, Conte is surely set to recall Thibaut Courtois to deputise between the sticks as Chelsea return to Premier League action.

The 29-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to AFC Bournemouth before the close of the January transfer window on Tuesday night, has not featured in the top-flight at all this season under Conte, instead being benched for all 22 fixtures so far.

Begovic, who made his fifth start for The Blues this term, albeit all have come either in the FA Cup or EFL Cup, had very little to do at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Brentford having just two shots on target, which proved routine stops for the Bosnian.

Having being a spectator for the majority of Chelsea’s fourth round tie, Begovic will watch tomorrow night’s Liverpool’s clash from the bench, unless a deadline day deal materialises…

John Terry

Thankfully the Chelsea captain avoided being sent off this time, after his red card antics against League One Peterborough United in the previous round.

The 36-year-old was given little to worry about from Brentford forward Lasse Vibe at the weekend, although it could have been a difficult afternoon for the skipper if Scott Hogan had started at Stamford Bridge.

Nevertheless, it was a comfortable shift for the veteran, though Terry hasn’t played for Chelsea in the Premier League since November 5, 2016.

So, it is widely expected for Conte to recall either Gary Cahill or David Luiz in his place for the trip to Merseyside.

Michy Batshuayi

Arguably, Chelsea fans would have left Saturday’s game wanting a little bit more from their summer signing.

Having joined the club for a reported £33.2m back in July from Anderlecht, the Belgium international has scored seven goals in 20 appearances in all competitions for The Blues.

The 23-year-old, who largely plays second fiddle to Diego Costa in Conte’s Premier League priorities, has netted just once in the top-flight this term.

Despite scoring against Brentford in the FA Cup, albeit it from the penalty spot, and setting up Pedro’s strike, Batshuayi still looks unconvincing as a strong understudy to Costa as Chelsea lead the Premier League title race.

Given that Costa has 15 goals in 20 league games this campaign, it is almost a certainly the Spaniard will be recalled to the front line, bar last minute injury.
