Chelsea have confirmed the Deadline Day signing of Italian left-back Marcos Alonso from Serie A side, Fiorentina, who joins on a five-year-deal.

The 25-year-old joins for a reported fee of £23m, as Blues boss Antonio Conte looks to bolster his defence before the window closes at 11pm on Wednesday.

The former Bolton man comes into Stamford Bridge after the Italian boss allowed 22-year-old full-back Baba Rahman to join Bundesliga outfit, Schalke, on loan for the season.

The Real Madrid academy graduate has ties with Chelsea, having played with Blues’ defender Gary Cahill at Bolton and providing an assist in Sunderland’s 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in 2014 during a loan spell with The Black Cats.

There may well still be business to be done in South West London before the deadline, with former defender David Luiz on the brink of a return, with a medical reportedly booked in London for 6pm on Wednesday evening.

The back line has been a priority for the former Juventus boss all summer, who will not have wanted to leave these deals quite so late.
