Manchester United welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils have dropped down to eighth in the Premier League table after a recent run of poor results, most recently a 1-0 loss against title chasing Arsenal on Sunday.

It has been heavily speculated that manager Erik ten Hag will be sacked this summer, following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS at the club earlier this year.

The Dutchman has insisted that he is still committed to United, but it had been reported that those in charge of the club could replace him with current England boss Gareth Southgate.

Now, though, it appears that United will look elsewhere if they do decide to dismiss Ten Hag.

Southgate has been touted as a potential successor to Ten Hag

As per Football Insider, United are unlikely to make a move for Southgate and will instead look at alternative options if Ten Hag does leave the club.

The report claims that United are set to sack Ten Hag at the end of the season but won’t move for Southgate despite Ratcliffe and director of football, Dave Brailsford, having close ties with the 53-year-old.

Southgate’s contract with the England national team is set to expire at the end of the year, after this summer’s European Championships in Germany.

The former Three Lions player has impressed in his current role, despite so far failing to end England’s long wait for a trophy.

It is also claimed that Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is most likely to replace Ten Hag.

The ex-Chelsea boss has announced he will leave Bavaria at the end of the current campaign, making him available this summer.
